Cross-modal effects in statistical learning: Evidence from the McGurk illusion

چکیده
Statistical learning is assumed to play a vital role in language acquisition, yet it is unknown whether it is guided by a unitary, modality-general mechanism, or by several sensory-specific mechanisms. Consistent with the latter view, Seitz et al (2007) tested learners with multimodal input and found that statistical learning in one modality is independent of input to other modalities. We tested this assertion of independence by presenting learners with speech streams synchronized with a video of a speaker’s face. We used the McGurk illusion to manipulate the underlying statistical structure of the speech streams. Contrasting the independence hypothesis, our results suggest that participants can integrate audio and visual input to perceive the McGurk illusion during statistical learning, thereby altering the pattern of segmentation. Our results suggest that auditory and visual inputs are not processed independently, but leave unresolved whether the resulting representations are integrated across modalities or not.

Multimodal integration in statistical learning: evidence from the McGurk illusion
Recent advances in the field of statistical learning have established that learners are able to track regularities of multimodal stimuli, yet it is unknown whether the statistical computations are performed on integrated representations or on separate, unimodal representations. In the present study, we investigated the ability of adults to integrate audio and visual input during statistical lea...
متن کاملThe Mcgurk illusion in the oddity task
Despite many studies of audiovisual integration in speech perception very few studies have addressed the issue of crossmodal response bias. Using synthetic acoustic speech, the current study demonstrates the McGurk illusion in the oddity task which is not prone to cross-modal response bias. This new method may be an useful tool for determining under which conditions audiovisual integration of s...
متن کاملMcgurk effect persists with a partially removed visual signal
This study investigated the impact of prolonged consonant durations on the McGurk effect and the role of static visual information in this cross-modal illusion. It was found that the McGurk effect did not break down nor diminish in strength when the consonant duration was extended up to 3.8s. This remained unchanged when the video frames in the quasi-static phase of the prolonged target consona...
متن کاملFace configuration affects speech perception: Evidence from a McGurk mismatch negativity study
We perceive identity, expression and speech from faces. While perception of identity and expression depends crucially on the configuration of facial features it is less clear whether this holds for visual speech perception. Facial configuration is poorly perceived for upside-down faces as demonstrated by the Thatcher illusion in which the orientation of the eyes and mouth with respect to the fa...
متن کاملo you see what you are hearing? Cross-modal effects of speech sounds on ipreading
It is well known that visual information derived from mouth movements (i.e., lipreading) can have profound effects on auditory speech identification (e.g. the McGurk-effect [16]). Here we examined the reverse phenomenon, namely whether auditory speech affects lipreading. We report that speech sounds 4 December 2009 ccepted 9 January 2010
